You must complete four steps to submit a sitemap to Google Search Console.
Log into your Google Search Console account so you are greeted with the dashboard for the site you want to add a sitemap to:
On the left-hand navigation, you will see a link to “Sitemaps” located under the “Indexing” nest of action items:
Click on this to access your sitemap report:
Your next step is to find the link to your sitemap that you want to add. In most cases, your sitemap URL will look like this:
https://yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml
However, this will not be the case for every website, especially larger sites with lots of URLs to manage.
If your sitemap is not similar to the link above, you can look at your website’s robots.txt file to see if the sitemap URL is there. As is the case with SEOTesting’s website:
Your website is built using a popular Content Management System.
Suppose your website was built with WordPress using a plugin like Yoast SEO or RankMath. In that case, your sitemap will usually be located at /sitemap_index.xml as these plugins would have automatically generated it.
If you are using Wix or Squarespace, your sitemap is typically located at /sitemap.xml and can be found there.
Your final step is to add your sitemap link/s to your sitemap report within Google Search Console. Go back to your sitemap report as we showed earlier, and enter a new URL into the box shown:
Finally, click “Submit” when the box changes color:
Once Google scans your sitemap, it will appear on your list. Under the “Status” section, it will tell you whether your sitemap has been successfully processed or if it has a problem.

For WordPress users, the simplest way to create a sitemap for your website is to use a plugin like Yoast SEO or RankMath.
These plugins are easy to install and have the capability to both create and manage your sitemap automatically.

As we showed earlier in the article, once you have created your sitemap, you should submit it to Google Search Console.
If you are not using WordPress to build your website, you have two options:
Tools like SEOTesting’s XML Sitemap Generator can generate a sitemap based on a list of URLs inputted. Run a crawl of your website via a tool such as ScreamingFrog or Sitebuilb and then paste these into the generator. The tool will then automatically create an XML sitemap for you and download it so you can upload it to Google Search Console and your website.
You also have the option to build out a sitemap manually.
To do this, you will need to write out the code yourself, ensuring it meets the standard of an XML sitemap and looks something like this:

You can then save this file, upload it to your site’s root directory, and test its accessibility. If it is working, you can also upload it to Google Search Console.
When creating sitemaps, you need to be aware of the five specific types of sitemaps so you can create the one that suits your needs the most:
XML sitemaps are specific to search engines. More specifically, they are designed for search engine bots to enable them to crawl a website efficiently. This sitemap type lists all essential pages with metadata, including information a search engine bot would find helpful, like when it was last modified.
HTML sitemaps are designed for visitors. They act as an additional page on your site with clickable links to all your web pages, which is great for accessibility reasons.
Both an HTML sitemap and an XML sitemap on your site are recommended for the reasons above.
Video sitemaps highlight all of your website’s video content and are a requirement for multimedia sites. Web crawlers can find these sitemaps and access all of the required information about the video that may help them show your videos on SERPs directly.
